Go Gowanus…and now you?

October 15, 2018

Did you know that Brooklyn would be the 4th largest city in the United States (if it weren’t already part of the largest U.S. city?

Among the many hallmarks of Brooklyn is a thriving artist community and some 700 art and cultural institutions. No wonder that Brooklyn is home to the New York Foundation for the Arts and a number of open studio events from Arts in Bushwick to Greenpoint Open Studios.

Over 300 artist will be participating in this year’s Arts Gowanus Open Studios 2018. An interested group of collectors, in cooperation with Project Art Lounge, will be touring some of them on Sunday, October 21st.

It doesn’t take a city of the size of Brooklyn to support a thriving artist community. Social media and a group of local artists are enough to serve as a catalyst to get the party started. Even towns without an active gallery scene are getting into the business. The trend to open studios and pop-up events is quickly spreading to towns across the country. If you’d like to learn more about how you can use digital marketing to build your artist community, join us at one of the art events scheduled on projectartlounge.com or contact us below:

Digital BBQ

July 31, 2018

When people in the know hear “South By”, they immediately think of music and ribs at the trendy festival turned conference mega-event in Austin, Texas. What many business don’t know, SXSW is more than just a meeting point for music and film fans. In fact, it’s an annual gather place for creatives of all sorts. The SXSW Interactive Conference includes hardcore techie tracks covering topics from Blockchain and Cryptocurrency to Health & MedTech. The music venues and bbq tents are a perfect backdrop for US and international executives to forge new relationships and discover new business opportunities.

A new focus topic in 2018 was how digital innovation is transforming cities, government and politics and Project Lounge spoke with many participants interested in growing their engagement with civic organizations and community leaders. The decline of local media organizations presents both challenges and opportunities for companies in engaging with local audiences. If your company needs help navigating the streets of Austin at South By in 2019, give us a call. We’d be happy to help you (and we know a few good BBQ spots too!).

Day of Gracious Living

On May 13, 1974 the bells of Stetson Chapel rang in the first “Day of Gracious Living” at Kalamazoo College, one of the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the United States. In a tradition that continues at my alma mater until today, classes are cancelled and students enjoy an unannounced day off during one of the busiest periods of the academic year.

Then and now, in the sloth of the Day of Gracious Living, important lessons are learned. Once in a while it’s a good idea to take a step back from the busy fray of (work)life to reflect on where you are heading, how far you’ve come and what your next steps will be.

So, on this 40th anniversary of the Day of Gracious Living – after 25 years of putting all that I have learned at Kalamazoo College to work in a successful career – I am taking that step back to enjoy a year of gracious living. Thanks to my partner’s company assignment to Tokyo, I embark on a sabbatical in Japan.

As hard work and exploration are in my DNA, the months ahead will be far from lazy. While taking a break from my digital media and consulting career at Project Lounge, you can continue to follow me on www.projectartlounge.com, an initiative I started with the international art exhibition LIGHT BREAKS last year in Basel, Switzerland. Besides exploring Japan, I will organize a number of exhibitions and events in the art world – a vocation as important and rewarding as any other I have pursued.

I look forward to continuing my profession with new goals and ideas in 2016. Until then, it’s time for a bit of gracious living.

Project Art Lounge

August 21, 2013

In the middle of August much of Europe (and all of France) is on holiday. As museums shorten their hours and gallery doors are closed – even in NYC – the city that never sleeps, the work behind the scenes goes on. Artists – like their sponsors – are busy planning and executing their projects. In fact, the work of an artist never seems to end and few people realize how complex the work of an artist is. Far from the creative side of things, building relationships, managing delivery schedules and supporting promotional activities are just part of the art business.

Thanks to artnet, paddle8 and a host of other online auction sites and art communities, even the art world has gone digital. So when the project lounge returns from its holiday in September, we look forward to reaching out to the art community as a whole new set of clients in need of our project management skills and expertise in the digital world. And along the way, we look forward to meeting some fascinating people. Happy summer everyone.

Digital Discoveries

July 1, 2013

Understanding clinical pathways has long been an important subject of medical research, with real-world evidence being a key driver of medical innovation. And now, digital pathways are helping the health care industry in its effort to improve health outcomes.

From a sensor on your smart phone, to social networks connecting patients, to new insurance plans with tele-medicine options, information technology is making its mark on an industry, which has until now focused almost entirely on big blockbuster drugs. These companies face new challenges as they try to harness the complexity and power of digital data, with issues such as the data security, compliance and the cost of service provision at the forefront of discussion. The opportunity: truly personalized medicine.

To move forward on the digital pathways, the health care industry will need to adapt itself both internally and in the marketplace, making digital communications a centerpiece of their innovation story. At the end of the day, the challenge to health care providers and pharmaceutical companies is the same as for everyone else: timely investments in digital content, infrastructure and services – and in the people who know how to put them to use. Compared to Smartphones, the Smart TV still has a lot to learn. While mobile devices have mastered the challenges of location based services, synchronization and intuitive user interface, Smart TVs are about as fit as the couch potatoes staring at them. Integration within the home network, content discoverability and performance issues are major challenges for users and developers alike. Getting these things right are essential for the success of Smart TV. Despite a growing number of Smart TVs, many customers are simply not hooking them up or just not using the connected services they have to offer.

While hardware vendors and content providers are still figuring out their strategies, app developers are caught in the middle without a standard framework to support them. Add to that country-specific politics and media regulation exercising their influence in the TV marketplace and you have your work cut out for you.

The Project Lounge knows the technology and content providers in the digital TV space. If your venture needs contacts or expertise to get off the couch, we are ready to help. More information at: info@project-lounge.com.

What’s App with you?

April 1, 2013

At the end of this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, many of the touted trends sounded quite familiar: device battles, context awareness, web apps vs. native and of course speeding things up with LTE.

While the focus is rightly still on the basics of cloud computing, user experience and managing the diversity of mobile devices, some new trends are emerging that present real opportunities for developers and providers looking for the next big thing.

Within the Project Lounge network, mobile payment, enterprise apps and leveraging the use of “big data” top the list of new developments we are talking with clients about.

The challenge is to pick your targets of innovation while still getting the basics right. After all, what good is innovation if performance, scalability and user-experience doesn’t work. At the Project Lounge there are experts ready to help you sort through the pieces and find the best solution.

Creativity or Chaos?

March 1, 2013

Excellent project managers must think “out of the box”. Whether working by waterfall or agile, though, project teams are always surrounded by constraints and deadlines which limit their ability to think openly. Innovative and flexible thinking is often a last resort during the “creative chaos” phase shortly before launch or when things get out of control, as they sometimes do. So why not plan a little creative chaos into your next project?

The Project Lounge can help your project team get out of the box and begin to encourage innovative thinking right from the beginning.

In cooperation with experienced project management experts, artists and coaches, the Project Lounge offers the following workshop for your team:

Day One: Planned Chaos

  • Introduction: harnessing creative chaos
  • Guided tour of artist studio or exhibition (if possible)
  • Artist’s perspective: working inside and out of the box
  • Project manager’s perspective and group discussion
  • Vernissage: New Perspectives

Day Two: Innovation in Practice

You can choose between two interactive sessions:

  • Pushing the limit – putting innovation into practice.
A hands-on workshop in which the participants will discover their own creative energy. The focus is on engaging individual enterprise rather than group dynamic.
  • Collective chaos – looking beyond the obvious.
This session engages a whole group, challenging each member to “join the team”, express themselves and really listen to the needs of others.

Location, hotel accommodations, meals and transfers will be arranged to fit your project budget. For more information, contact info@project-lounge.com.

After 20 years with leading telecommunications, IT and media companies, I have decided to leverage my experience as an independent consultant.
